Dish Gets Scripps Networks Rights for Online Video Service (THR)
Pay TV company Dish Network and Scripps Networks Interactive on Tuesday announced a multi-year carriage renewal for the latter’s lifestyle cable TV networks. Deadline Hollywood HGTV, Food Network and Great American Country are among the Scripps Networks Interactive channels that will be part of the package that Dish Network is assembling for its planned broadband video service that will target young viewers who want a low-cost alternative to the full pay TV bundle that many consider to be too expensive. Re/code The service is supposed to launch this year. Like pacts Dish has previously made with Disney and A&E, the agreement is part of a larger distribution deal for the satellite TV company. Last week, Sony announced that it had made progress on its own Web TV plans by signing up Viacom. Variety In addition to the over-the-top streaming rights, the pact expands Dish’s distribution of authenticated live and VOD programming on Internet-connected devices and widens distribution of DIY and Cooking Channel to Dish’s America’s Top 200 satellite TV package. The OTT rights under the deal with Scripps Networks let Dish deliver multiple streams per household. “This first-of-its-kind OTT deal for Scripps Networks Interactive enables us to reach even more people through Dish’s innovative services,” said Ken Lowe, Scripps Networks Interactive president and CEO. New York Post Dish chairman Charlie Ergen was on the East Coast last week wooing programmers to the new platform, sources said. Dish is one of the first companies to risk cannibalizing its existing pay-TV product to be a first mover in burgeoning Internet-based TV space.

Ellen’s Oscar Selfie Breaks Twitter Record (Variety)
Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres herded Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Spacey and others into the most legendary selfie to ever hit the Internet. The sheer number of A-listers packed into the shot apparently caused Twitter to crash, leaving thousands of users locked out. ABC News During the telecast, DeGeneres vowed to set a new record with a photo of her posing with the gaggle of stars sitting in the audience. She had Cooper take the photo, which she captioned, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars” WSJ / Speakeasy The tweet then received more than 921,000 retweets in less than 40 minutes. It went on to get more than a million retweets and counting in less than an hour. The previously most retweeted tweet was one sent by the Twitter account @barackobama when the president won re-election. It simply said, “Four more years.” The Daily Beast The epic selfie needed more than 780,063 retweets to eclipse the iconic victory photo tweeted by Barack Obama in November 2012. It got more than that in just about 35 minutes. AllTwitter By 6 a.m. Monday, the tweet had been retweeted more than 2.3 million times and counting. Indeed, activity around the tweet and the Oscars was so heavy that Twitter experienced a 25-minute slowdown and a full shutdown for some users as the selfie quickly broke the record. Bloomberg Businessweek “We crashed and broke Twitter,” DeGeneres said later from the stage. “We made history.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which presents the awards, took credit for the outage. “Sorry, our bad,” the Academy said on its Twitter account. Variety Unexpected demand for ABC’s live stream of the Oscars telecast over the Internet resulted in the video going down for users across the U.S., the network said Sunday. The live video through the Watch ABC app was “down nationwide due to a traffic overload/greater than expected,” a network rep said in an email. As of 10:45 p.m. ET, the feeds were back up, according to the rep, declining to provide additional information.

Scripps Acquires Travel Channel

travel.jpgThere haven’t been too many media deals recently, so today’s announcement is exciting. Scripps Networks Interactive Inc., which currently owns the lifestyle cable channels Food Network and HGTV, announced today that it has entered into a joint venture with Cox Communications that will result in Scripps owning a controlling interest in the Travel Channel — valued at $975 million.

The transaction, which is expected to close in January, will leave Cox with a 35 percent stake in the Travel Channel, while Scipps will own 65 percent. Scripps is paying $181 million in cash and the partnership between Scripps and Cox will take on $878 million in third-party debt, the companies said.

“Adding the Travel Channel, and its related enterprises, provides us with a unique opportunity to meaningfully expand our portfolio into a lifestyle category that’s highly desirable to media consumers, advertisers and programming distributors,” said Scripps CEO Kenneth Lowe, in a statement on the deal. “Our vision for Travel follows the same script that’s made Food Network and HGTV two of the most powerful brands in all of television. By lending our unparalleled expertise in developing successful lifestyle media businesses, we have every confidence that we can build on Travel’s strong brand identity and leverage the successes achieved to date by the top-notch team at Travel Channel and our new partners at Cox Communications.”
