Poynter Snags Three-Time Pulitzer Prize Winner

DavidBarstowPicDavid Barstow‘s first Pulitzer was for public service, in 2004. The second, a 2009 prize for investigative reporting. And the third came just last year, when Barstow – together with his New York Times colleague Alejandra Sxanic von Bertrab – won for a series about Wal-Mart malfeasance in Mexico.

Moving forward, this esteemed member of the journalism profession will soon be contributing to the website poynter.org and teaching via the organization’s e-learning site News University. From today’s announcement that he is joining the institute’s adjunct faculty:

“David Barstow is one of the premier investigative reporters and storytellers of this generation, or any generation,” said Tim Franklin, president of The Poynter Institute. “He represents exactly what Poynter strives to impart in its programs and its teaching – excellent journalism that serves the public interest. David is the first of several new adjuncts who will be joining the institute’s already stellar teaching team.”

Tim Franklin Named President of Poynter Institute

The Poynter Institute has named Tim Franklin its new president. Franklin comes to Poynter from Bloomberg, where he served as managing editor of Bloomberg News in Washington. He had been with Bloomberg LP since 2011. Previously, Franklin served as editor of the Indianapolis Star, the Orlando Sentinel and the Baltimore Sun.

Franklin is succeeding Karen Dunlap, who is retiring after 10 years with Poynter. Franklin will become just the fifth president of Poynter since it was founded in 1975.

“Tim brings a wealth of experience in journalism across all platforms, and a strong background in journalism education,” said Paul Tash, chairman of the Poynter Institute trustees, in a statement. “For everyone who cares about journalism as a foundation of democracy, this is excellent news.”

Bloomberg to Publish Daily Mag for Republican and Democratic Conventions

Bloomberg LP has big plans for the Republican and Democratic conventions this year. The media giant plans to publish daily magazines, titled Bloomberg Insider, for each event. The glossies will be distributed each day, pulling information from Bloomberg View, Businessweek and Bloomberg Government, a web-subscription service launched last year.

Bloomberg Insider will feature well-packaged news and information from all of our platforms together with Bloomberg’s exclusive data, information and analytics,” said Tim Franklin, a managing editor for Bloomberg News, who will also serve as editor for Insider.

There will be 15,000 copies of Insider distributed per day during the conventions, but as Adweek notes, the title will have some competition. Politico, National Journal, CQ and Roll Call will all be publishing dailies during the event.
