The Return of Tavis Smiley

tsmiley.gifThe DC Examiner reports that Tavis Smiley is returning to public radio after an acrimonious departure from NPR that we started to get into here a couple of months ago:

The closest we’ve seen so far has been the exit of Tavis Smiley, who says that working at NPR under his former salary and budgetary constraints was akin to working “in chains and shackles”, and that “for black kids and brown kids yet unborn, [he] felt [he] had to say no” to his existing compensation package and marketing budget, the size about which we can only speculate. (Unless, of course, you tell us. FishbowlNY@mediabistro.com. That’s F-I-S-H-B…)

We’d accuse Smiley of needless hyperbole, but we think “chains and shackles” when people bring up NPR as well—though we’re referring to the listener’s experience. At any rate, we never quite got that last question answered. The address is still the same.
