Think Your Job Sucks? At Least You Don’t Cover The Knicks.

1128ewing.jpgRemember when the Knicks used to win games? That was pretty cool…

We always thought covering the Knicks would be a fun job. You go see some games, wax nostalgic about the Patrick Ewing/John Starks era team and curse Isiah Thomas under your breath.

But it turns out that, for sportswriters, the Knicks c. 2008 are the worst beat in the world.

Here are just a few of the quotes gathered by the Observer‘s John Koblin on how sportswriters view covering the Knicks:

  • Newsday‘s Alan Hahn: “It’s Madison Square Garden, it’s New York City, it should be one of the top beats in New York… It’s maddening. What it should be and what it is-it’s a shame.”

  • Frank Isola of the Daily News: “It used to be fun here. Now, there are some nights when you’re trying to talk your boss out of sending you here and maybe lie and tell him you’re sick or something.”

  • The New York TimesHoward Beck: “I’ll admit that the beat makes me miserable.”

According to Koblin, James Dolan has made covering the Knicks “the most demoralizing reporting gig in the city.”

…And we just had another childhood dream shattered. Yeah, thanks a lot Dolan.
