Troubles at The International Herald Tribune

We hear The New York Times-owned International Herald Tribune has warned they’re going to announce job cuts, without saying which departments would suffer. The Times had, after taking over the Paris-based IHT from partner WashPo about four years ago, told staffers there was a five-year plan, and draconian measures would only be considered if and when that plan didn’t pan out. The losses are large, even massive, at the grand-dame of American journalistic publications abroad.

One silver lining for the workers: a lot of them are protected by rather generous French work rules that require things like large payoffs for layoffs.
