Al Sharpton Demanding Golf Channel Anchor's Firing

0110tilghman.jpgRev. Al Sharpton plans to lead protests demanding Golf Channel anchor's firing... while getting her gender wrong.

The Rev. Al Sharpton is arguing that Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman (pictured) should be fired for an offensive remark during the Mercedes-Benz Championship. While doing live commentary for the event with analyst Nick Faldo, Tilghman jokingly suggested that new players looking to take on Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."

Here's the exchange that started everything:

Faldo: (While discussing strategies for younger golf players looking to overtake Woods) "To take Tiger on, maybe they should just gang up for a while."

Tilghman: (Laughing) "Lynch him in a back alley."

Tilghman has already been suspended for two weeks by the network, which means she'll miss both the Sony Open and the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. No comment by Woods as of yet, but his agent Mark Steinberg said that he considered the matter "case closed" and that "Tiger and Kelly are friends, and Tiger has a great deal of respect for Kelly."

Despite the support of Woods' camp for Tilghman in the matter, Sharpton is planning to picket the Golf Channel to demand her firing (incidentally, Sharpton's public statement at press time gets Tilghman's gender wrong. As can be seen by the picture to the right — Tilghman is indeed female. However, Sharpton's National Action Network states "he will pickett the Golf Channel for employing him."

Official statement from the Golf Channel and Sharpton's statement (extra points for spotting the typo) after the jump.

Golf Channel:

The GOLF CHANNEL regrets the poorly chosen remarks made by Kelly Tilghman on a recent broadcast and, again, extends our apologies to anyone who was offended.

There is simply no place on our network for offensive language like this.

While we believe that Kelly's choice of words were inadvertent and that she did not intend them in an offensive manner, the words were hurtful and grossly inappropriate.

Consequently, we have decided to suspend Kelly for two weeks, effective immediately.
