WABC-TV’s Heidi Jones Officially Charged in Faking Story of Attack

WABC-TV/Channel 7 weather forecaster Heidi Jones was in a courtroom today being formally charged with falsely telling police that she was attacked in Central Park.

The Daily News reports she stood silently while prosecutors told Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Lynn Kotler that Jones faces two misdemeanors–punishable by up to one year in prison.

In her revised statement to police on December 13, Jones opened up about her allegedly faking the story.

“I did make this up. I made it up for attention. I have so much stress at work, with my personal life and with my family. I know there is no justification for it,” Jones said, according to the court papers.

However, in her original statement to NYPD investigators on Dec. 1, Jones documented an attack being on Sept. 24 in Central Park, with an additional attack on Nov. 21 outside of her home.

Jones’ lawyer Paul Callan, who says his client has been “vilified” in the media, entered a not guilty plea.

Sources say the false reporting is connected to problems in her personal life.

A spokesman for WABC tells FishbowlNY that Jones, who has been with WABC since 2005, remains suspended indefinitely pending an internal investigation.
