With Newspaper Guild And Newsweek Agreement In Place, Daily Beast Merger Is Imminent

The Newspaper Guild of New York and Newsweek have come to terms that will clear the last obstacle standing in the way of the impending Newsweek/Daily Beast merger.  The guild and Newsweek have agreed that non-supervisory editorial employees of the Daily Beast will be provided with the same contract afforded to Newsweek’s editorial staffers.  Newspaper Guild of New York president Bill O’ Meara sees the value in the Newsweek/Daily Beast union.

Newsweek’s Guild members are proud to be part of this exciting new venture that will combine the journalistic resources of a venerable news magazine and a cutting-edge news website in an editorial workplace in which all employees will have a voice.  We look forward to working with the operation’s highly respected new editor, Tina Brown, and her team from the Daily Beast as they join with the Newsweek staff to produce high-quality journalism in the digital age.

The agreement states that Daily Beast employees that are currently paid less than the minimums laid out in the Guild-Newsweek contract will have their salaries raised to scale.  Employee seniority will also be factored into salary totals and select Newsweek employees will be offered voluntary buyouts.  Once the merger is finalized, both sides will discuss cost-effective methods to ensure the new company will flourish in its early stages.
