Today, amidst news that nearly 200 people have lost their jobs at Condé Nast, there is good news over at Meredith Corp., a media company and magazine publisher that has been doing a lot of executive shuffling over the past few months.
Meredith announced today that Carey Witmer, Family Circle‘s publisher, has been promoted to the position of vice president/publisher at the magazine. Her advancement is no doubt due to the success Family Circle has seen in 2009, including four record-breaking issues this year as well as the biggest issue in the magazine’s 22-year history, Meredith said.

MEREDITH CORPORATION PROMOTES CAREY WITMER TO VICE PRESIDENT/PUBLISHER OF FAMILY CIRCLE MAGAZINE
NEW YORK, NY, (OCTOBER 5, 2009) — Meredith Corporation, the nation’s leading media and marketing company serving women, announced today that Carey Witmer has been promoted to Vice President/Publisher of Family Circle.
“Since joining the brand in May 2008, Carey has led Family Circle to record heights,” says Andy Sareyan, Chief Brand Officer of the National Media Group. “Under her leadership the Family Circle brand is on track to be the year’s leading gainer in advertising pages and revenue across the entire publishing industry.”
Family Circle, which focuses on issues facing the moms of teens and tweens, has a circulation of 3.8 million and 20 million readers and is one of the most widely read monthly magazines in the world. Witmer has lead Family Circle to four record breaking issues in 2009; including the magazine’s biggest issue in its seventy-seven year history.
Witmer rises to Vice President/Publisher of Family Circle from Publisher, a position she has held since May 2008. The magazine has gained market share over ten consecutive months, and by the end of calendar 2009 Family Circle will have achieved the number one position among the women’s lifestyle/service set. The brand was also recognized as one of Adweek’s Media’s “Magazine Brand Leaders” in 2008.
Prior to joining Family Circle, Witmer served as the Associate Publisher of Better Homes & Gardens. She has also held positions including Publisher and Associate Publisher of Country Home and Advertising Director for Midwest Living. During her tenure as Associate Publisher of Better Homes & Gardens, the magazine was named Advertising Age’s Magazine of the Year. Witmer joined Meredith in 1998 as the Midwest Manager of Sales for Midwest Living.
Witmer was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. The graduate of The University of Iowa currently resides with her husband and three children in Cos Cob, Connecticut.
She will continue to be based in Meredith’s New York offices on Park Avenue.
