CNN.com’s Subscription Model Is Dead

Yesterday’s WSJ buried the lead, revealing that CNN.com’s summer redesign will make “all its live and archived video content available free, shifting the subscription model to an advertising model.”

Today the network confirmed the change in this press release: “After nearly 18 months of offering CNN Pipeline through subscription, CNN.com will begin offering users free of charge even more of the great video they expect — live and on-demand.” The site will open up its video archives and offer “up to four streams of live content but without the need to download a video player.”

In other words — CNN.com’s subscription model is dead.

> Flashback: Back in December, Lost Remote said “CNN has been tight-lipped about subscription numbers, but it says it remains committed to the pay video service.”
