Oct. #’s: CNBC’s Best Biz Day In 30 Months

CNBC’s Business Day programming, from 5am to 7pm Monday through Friday, averaged 70,000 viewers in the coveted 25-54 demo in Oct. 2006 — its best time period performance in two and a half years (since April 2004).

Business Day was up 71 percent versus an Oct. 2005 average of 41,000 demo viewers. Every CNBC show from 6am to 8pm increased its demo audience over last October.

The network’s “year-to-year gains were largest during market hours (94,000 A25-54 from 9:30-4:00p), up 92% versus last October (49,000),” according to an internal ratings release…

Oct. #’s: MSNBC Posts Big Gains With Hardball, Countdown, Scarborough

Fox News and CNN were mostly down in October primetime, compared to the same month a year ago. But MSNBC was mostly up, with Hardball enjoying a 27 percent gain in the demo and Scarborough Country recording a 13 percent increase. Countdown with Keith Olbermann beat CNN’s Paula Zahn in the demo again, and came within 2,000 viewers of beating her in total viewers. Olbermann was up 61 percent in the demo versus last year. Evening News Ratings: Week of Oct. 23

NBC Nightly News was #1 in all categories last week. CBS had its second-worst week since Katie Couric‘s premiere, with 7.29 million viewers. (Couric is 50,000 viewers away from dropping below Schieffer’s final week again.)

The total viewer gap between ABC and CBS — 1,090,000 — is the largest it’s been in more than eight months, ABC noted.

For the week of Oct. 23:

Total viewers: NBC: 8,860,000 / ABC: 8,380,000 / CBS: 7,290,000

25-54 demo: NBC: 2.4/9 / ABC: 2.2/9 / CBS: 1.9/7

Midterms: Woodruff & Co. On Bloomberg

TVNewser broke the news last week and now it’s official: Judy Woodruff “will analyze midterm returns next Tuesday for Bloomberg TV.”

“I know about as much about business as someone who has covered politics for a long time. All I know how to do is ask the questions, and sometimes they’re not even smart questions. I’ve got a lot of studying to do,” Woodruff tells the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Roger Simon and John Mercurio will join Woodruff with commentary. “Also on the roster: Bloomberg anchors Peter Cook (Money & Politics) and Rhonda Schaffler (The Bloomberg Report) and reporters Lindsey Arent and Lizzie O’Leary…”

> Update: “Woodruff’s hiring is especially interesting given Bloomberg’s policies prohibiting nepotism,” an e-mailer says. “No other employee, except for Al Hunt, has been allowed to have a spouse also join Bloomberg. Will Al Hunt and Judy Woodrfull try to change that nepotism policy?…”

Koppel Special On Iran To Air Nov. 19

Ted Koppel second special for the Discovery Channel is titled “Iran – The Most Dangerous Nation.” It premieres Nov. 19 at 8pm.

Koppel spent three weeks in the country. He “was able to travel outside Tehran to the holy city of Qom, the old capital Isfahan, to the busy border with Iraq, and into the rural areas,” the press release says.

> Also: “The Koppel team was the last group of journalists allowed into the country before the Iranian government stopped granting journalist visas…”

priceoct41.jpgDave Price will be sticking around CBS’ “The Early Show” for at least a few years to come,” the NY Daily News reports.

“Price and CBS renewed his contract to be the weatherman for the morning show, while adding some ‘entertainment-based projects.’ What those projects will be remains to be seen. It’s not the first time such ventures have been announced as part of a deal with Price, though they haven’t resulted in actual programming…”
