Former ‘Meet The Press’ Moderator Bill Monroe Dies

Former NBC News Washington Bureau Chief and “Meet the Press” moderator Bill Monroe has died at age 90.

Monroe moderated “Meet the Press” from 1975-1984, taking over for Lawrence Spivak, and was succeeded by Roger Mudd and Marvin Kalb. Here, Kalb wishes Monroe well on his final day as moderator of the program:

Says NBC News president Steve Capus: “Bill Monroe’s contributions to NBC News as Washington Bureau Chief and Moderator of Meet the Press are countless and considerable. His courage in covering the civil rights movement, and his groundbreaking interviews with the newsmakers of his time puts Bill as one of our nation’s preeminent journalists. He was a true crusader.”

After the jump, two of Monroe’s most famous interviews, pressing former Alabama Governor George Wallace on the issue of segregation, and former President Jimmy Carter on sending American athletes to the Moscow Olympics.
