“‘There should be at any time at any network a small group of people who … can fill in the (anchor) job quite admirably, but we quite honestly are not in that situation at CBS news,’ said [Sean] McManus.
‘We have to develop the correspondents and give them a profile and showcase them … so that they can become very well-known newscasters with a high profile,’ he said.
‘Having said that, it’s more a question of perception rather than reality,’ he said, noting that CBS correspondents like John Roberts, Russ Mitchell and Mika Brzezinski had the skills but lacked the stature.
‘That they don’t is the deficiency of the person running the news division. Part of my job is to groom that bench of correspondents so that they can fill that seat,’ he said.”
