Three weeks into the month, the network lost its biggest star in Keith Olbermann whose show was up +6% year-over-year, one of the few cable news programs to grow. Overall, MSNBC was the only cable news channel to grow year-over-year: +23% in Total Viewers and +25% in younger viewers (total day, Mon-Sun).

Maddow at 9pmET topped CNN in Total Viewers and younger viewers for the 12th consecutive month and “Morning Joe” topped CNN’s “American Morning” (which also lost a co-anchor) for the 11th consecutive month in Total Viewers, and for the 6th month in a row in younger viewers.

NEW YORK – February 1, 2011 – MSNBC topped CNN in total viewers and among adults 25-54 in January. This marks the seventh straight month in the target demographic and the third consecutive month in total viewers, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.
In their new time periods, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” at 8 p.m. and “The Ed Show” at 10 p.m. each topped their competition on CNN for the week of January 24- January 28, 2011. Additional, “The Rachel Maddow Show” beat CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” during the program’s highly publicized first two weeks on the air.
Following are MSNBC ratings highlights for January:
MSNBC beat CNN in total day among A25-54 for the 7th consecutive month (153,000 vs. 130,000) and total viewers (453,000 vs. 426,000) for the 3rd straight month.
“Morning Joe” beat CNN’s “American Morning” for the 11th consecutive month (442,000 vs. 221,000), and for the 6th month in a row among A25-54 (128,000 vs. 88,000).
“Hardball with Chris Matthews” at 5 p.m. ranked #2 in all key demos for the second consecutive month. “Glenn Beck” on Fox News Channel delivered its smallest A25-54 audience (397,000) and total viewer audience (1.762 million) since the show’s debut in January 2009.
For the month, MSNBC at 6p ranked #2 and beat CNN among A25-54 (166,000 vs. 134,000) for the 7th consecutive month and among total viewers (747,000 vs. 498,000) for the 11th month in a row. In its first week, “MSNBC Live” anchored by Cenk Ugyar at 6 p.m. ranked #2 in the hour, topping CNN in A25-54 (154,000 vs. 144,000) and total viewers (691,000 vs. 491,000).
At 7 p.m. “Hardball with Chris Matthews” beat CNN for the 12th consecutive month in total viewers (745,000 vs. 437,000) and the 11th month in a row among A25-54 (189, 000 vs. 128,000).
In January, MSNBC beat CNN for the 35th consecutive month at 8 p.m. among A25-54 (259,000 vs. 125,000) and total viewers (1.071 million vs. 478,000). In addition, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” is off to a strong start in the 8 p.m. time period. In its first week at 8 p.m., “The Last Word” ranked #2 with total viewers (1.172 million vs. CNN’s 534,000) and A25-54 (257,000 vs. 163,000).
“The Rachel Maddow Show” beat all competitive programming on CNN in January, marking the 12th consecutive monthly win over CNN among A25-54 (254,000 vs. 203,000) and total viewers (990,000 vs. 722,000). During the first two weeks of CNN’s highly publicized debut of “Piers Morgan Tonight,” Maddow delivered 283,000 A25-54 (vs. CNN’s 279,000) and 1.108 million total viewers (vs. 978,000).
For the month, MSNBC at 10 p.m. ranked #2 and beat CNN among A25-54 (240,000 vs. 174,000) and total viewers (861,000 vs. 595,000) for the 7th consecutive month. In January, FOX’s “On the Record with Greta VanSusteren” delivered its smallest A25-54 audience (333,000) and total viewer audience (1.499 million) since July 2008. In its debut week, “The Ed Show” at 10 p.m. topped CNN’s “AC360” among A25-54 (218,000 vs. 190,000) and total viewers (811,000 vs. 574,000).
MSNBC is #1 in delivering African American and Hispanic viewers among cable news channels for the 12th consecutive month in M-Su Primetime.
