Washington Post Suspends Mike Wise Following Twitter Hoax

Washington Post sports columnist Mike Wise says that he has been suspended for one month from the newspaper, following a hoax he pulled on Twitter yesterday.

What happened? Wise decided he would add some new Twitter followers… by making up interesting sports scoops that he had been “told.” Our sister blog FishbowlDC and SBNation have more information on the hoax.

The Upshot’s Michael Calderone has more on Wise’s suspension (which the Post will not confirm):

Wise wrote on Twitter after the incident that he’s “an idiot” and offered “apologies to all involved.” But the columnist still didn’t appear to grasp just why Twitter users (including other journalists) assume respected journalists are publishing accurate information on the medium. “I was right about nobody checking facts or sourcing,” he added along with Monday’s apology.
