Soledad O’Brien: ‘I never thought that I should not be emotionally connected to a story’

CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien spoke to the Poynter Institute this week, explaining her view that it is important for a journalists to have an emotional connection to the stories they cover:

“I think people feel that being objective means not having feelings about a story,” O’Brien said. “I never thought that I should not be emotionally connected to a story, whether I’m interviewing a serial killer serving life or a principal of a school, or an elected official. I want to get in their heads, and the only way to get in their heads is to be engaged with who they are.”
