Cable News Wars: Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl Edition

O'Reilly Hayes

The prisoner exchange bringing Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl home for five Taliban members has dominated cable news all week, and last night, it sparked a new round in the cable news wars.

“Ms. Costello [Carol] has an absolute responsibility to know what she’s talking about when she does an interview…she obviously doesn’t know what she’s talking about,” Bill O’Reilly said after airing parts of CNN’s Costello interviewing Rolling Stone writer Matthew Farwell. “Bill O’Reilly, the most dangerous thing that guy has ever done is walk across the street in New York to buy a burger,” Farwell said in response to a question about O’Reilly’s criticism of Bergdahl’s father, Bob.

“That guy is either uninformed, or a liar,” O’Reilly responded, adding his reporting career speaks for itself. On Costello, O’Reilly added: “She has an ethical obligation as a journalist to challenge that kind of stuff.”

Meanwhile, O’Reilly’s 8pmET counterpart Chris Hayes, took issue with his coverage: “Blatant Islamophobia here is eclipsed only by the sheer ridiculousness of the argument,” Hayes said after airing clips of O’Reilly criticizing Bob Bergdahl for appearing at the White House in a full beard, looking like a Muslim.

Hayes then sarcastically asked if we should be worried about other full-bearded men, rolling a montage that included the cast of Duck Dynasty, ZZ Top, Forrest Gump, Abraham Lincoln, and Jesus. On the latter two, Hayes suggested: “Someone needs to look into the guy [O'Reilly] who wrote two sympathetic books about them.”

“I’ll be waiting for the Factor investigation,” Hayes concluded.

Joe Scarborough, Chuck Todd Battle Over Bob Bergdahl’s Parenting Skills

ScarboroughToddChuck Todd and Joe Scarborough got into a shouting match over the parenting skills of Bob Bergdahl, the father of just-released American POW Bowe Bergdahl. It started when Scarborough held up an image from today’s TIME magazine, and was questioning Pres. Obama putting his arm about Bob Bergdahl, following Saturday’s announcement, who had been “reaching out to pro-Taliban forces” during his son’s captivity.

“Don’t criticize the parents, here. Don’t criticize the parents,” Todd interjected from Brussels, where he is traveling with the president. “Oh, my God Chuck,” Scarborough shot back.¬†”Any good father would not tell their son to ‘follow their conscience,’ and…”

Chuck: So he’s a bad father?
Joe: Yes. Yes, he is!
Chuck: Wow!

Father of Freed POW Bowe Bergdahl Asks Media to Keep Its Distance

BergdahlPresident Obama spoke from the Rose Garden this evening along with the parents of freed POW Bowe Bergdahl. Bergdahl, who had been held by the Taliban since June, 2009, was released earlier today in an operation brokered by the U.S., Qatar and Afghanistan with the Taliban. In exchange, five Guantanamo Bay detainees will be turned over to Qatari officials.

“The recovery of our son is going to be a considerable task for our family,” said Bob Bergdahl. “We hope that the media will understand that that will keep us very preoccupied in the coming days and weeks as he gets back home to the United States.”

Bob Bergdahl also spoke directly to his son in Pashto adding that Bowe “is having trouble¬†speaking English.” Col. Jack Jacobs, a Medal of Honor recipient and an MSNBC analyst, said that’s not unusual. ‘When I was in Vietnam, I spent my entire time with the Vietnamese, speaking Vietnamese. I actually started to dream in Vietnamese and it took me several weeks after I got home before I started to think first in English.”

In addition to coverage on the cable news networks, CBS, FOX and NBC provided broadcast special reports.

FNC Military Analyst to Explain “Apparent Deserter” Comment

Bowe_7.21.bmpFox News analyst Lt. Col. Ralph Peters will be a guest on “The O’Reilly Factor” tonight, presumably to explain his comments on FNC this weekend that captured Army Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl is, “an apparent deserter.”

“We know this private is a liar, we’re not sure if he’s a deserter but the media needs to hit the pause button and not portray this guy as a hero,” said Lt. Col. Peters.
