Stanley Cup Final Game 7 Scores 5.7 Overnight Rating

Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final earned a 5.7 overnight rating (10 share), tying 2003 (Anaheim-New Jersey) for the best NHL Stanley Cup Game 7 overnight on record, according to The Nielsen Company.

Wednesday’s game ties for the second-best Stanley Cup overnight rating in 37 years, trailing only last year’s Chicago-Philadelphia Game 6 (5.8/10 overnight)

In Boston, the game earned a 43.4 rating and a 64 share, the best overnight in the Boston market featuring a local team in any major sports championship since Super Bowl XLII (55.6) in 2008.

For the entire Stanley Cup, Boston’s local rating was a 28.1/44, 12 percent higher than Boston’s seven-game average (25.0/40) for the 2010 NBA Finals on ABC. Read more

NHL's 'History Will Be Made' Stanley Cup Campaign Returns… With Added Reach

The NHL is bringing back its Stanley Cup ad campaign, titled “History Will be Made.”

This year, however, a whole lot more people will be watching it, as the campaign will appear across nearly all of the NBCUniversal networks and platforms, including NBC, Versus, CNBC and MSNBC.

As was the case last year, the NHL will be using social media extensively for the campaign, letting fans download the theme music to create their own “History Will be Made” spots.

The first two ads will debut March 13 during NBC’s broadcast of the Chicago Blackhawks-Washington Capitals game, with an additional 20 spots launching by April 13, when the playoffs kick-in. New ads will be produced each day of the playoffs, highlighting a key moment from the previous day’s games.

“There is both quality and power in the History Will Be Made campaign,” said John Miller, who heads the NBC Sports Agency and the NBCUniversal Marketing Council in a statement. “By pooling our creative resources and air time, we believe collectively we can effectively tell the story of the excitement and emotion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.”

Watch Out ESPN: CBS Rebranding 'CBS College Sports Network' as 'CBS Sports Network'

In something of a surprise move, CBS announced that the CBS College Sports Network will rebrand as the CBS Sports Network starting April 4, 2011.

The network will still focus on college sports at first, but CBS says it expects to expand the content it features down the line. CBS hired former ESPN exec David Berson in December to run the network’s day-to-day operations.

With the rebrand, CBS is planning to more closely leverage its other sports properties with the network, including CBS Sports, Showtime Sports, CBSSports.com and MaxPreps.com.

“The rebranding of CBS College Sports Network to CBS Sports Network is an important step in the evolution of CBS Sports, allowing us to create more programming opportunities and expand our viewer base,” said CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus in a statement. “We are excited about extending the CBS Sports brand as we position CBS Sports Network as a destination for all sports fans.”
