Government Shutdown Showdown Keeps White House Press Corps Up Late

It was a late night last night for the journalists who cover the White House as Pres. Obama appeared in the briefing room around 10:45pmET. Obama’s three-minute statement followed an 80-minute meeting with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate leader Harry Reid over the budget impasse. The three cable networks carried the statement. Obama took no questions.

Politico reports Rep. Boehner and Sen. Reid are heading back to the White House this afternoon for more negotiations.

As Alex mentioned earlier, Fox News broke in to “The O’Reilly Factor” to carry live coverage of the final two Chilean miners being rescued, with coverage anchored by Shepard Smith. That meant the final 40 or so minutes of the pre-taped “Factor” was interrupted during the 8pmET airing.
