Contract Instructional Designer (Hybrid – Bay Area / Livermore, CA)
We are seeking a
detail-oriented and collaborative Instructional Designer
to support the development of technical training programs within the
Power Generation utility industry . This is a
contract role
with a hybrid structure—primarily remote with occasional travel within the service territory.
Important:
Only candidates
located in the Bay Area or near Livermore, CA
will be considered.
Work Setup
Hybrid:
90% remote / 10% travel
Travel: Quarterly visits within service territory (including Sierra region); occasional overnight stays
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (PST)
Equipment: Laptop provided (additional equipment via supplier)
Note: No reimbursement for cell phone or internet usage
Communication via Microsoft Teams or phone
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop
instructor-led and on-the-job training
for apprenticeship programs
Create high-quality learning materials including:
Hands-on activities and simulations
Scenarios, videos, and assessments
Conduct
task analysis
for job functions, processes, and systems
Define
learning objectives and course structures
aligned with stakeholder needs
Collaborate closely with
Senior Instructional Designers
to follow standards and templates
Partner with
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
for content validation and feedback
Participate in key project milestones (task analysis, alpha/beta reviews, pilot sessions, train-the-trainer)
Required Qualifications
3+ years of experience developing
technical instructor-led training
(utilities or related industries preferred)
Bachelor’s degree in
Instructional Design, Education , or related field
Strong skills in:
Technical writing
Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines independently
Team-oriented, adaptable, and receptive to feedback
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in:
Hydroelectric operations
Construction or heavy equipment training
Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field
Familiarity with tools such as:
Articulate 360
Questionmark
Author-It
Graphic design skills
Teaching or training delivery experience
Prior experience with utility training academies
Additional Information
Contract role with potential for extension (not guaranteed)
