Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hiring a Site Superintendent III at Sangamois State Fish and Wildlife Area for the Office of Land Management. This role manages operations at the Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area and Anderson Lake, supervising a large staff, maintaining site grounds, facilities, and equipment, and coordinating the waterfowl hunting program.

Essential Functions

Under direction, manages the operation of the Sanganois SFWA and Anderson Lake, supervising a large staff engaged in site operations, maintenance, and interpretive activities.

Directs and participates in the preparation and maintenance of site operational and financial records and reports.

Directs and participates in the maintenance and improvements of site grounds, facilities, and equipment.

Plans, coordinates, and implements farming activities and other programs compatible with the waterfowl hunting program.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with media, interested groups, and individuals.

Understands and explains agency policies, rules, and regulations to site visitors.

Reports and/or responds to emergency situations such as fires, flooding, accidents, road closures, severe storms, and police/fire department assistance.

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in park and recreation administration, natural resource administration, museum administration, history, American studies, or archaeology.

Four years of supervisory experience in managing an outdoor recreational park, natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum.

Preferred Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource management, structural grounds maintenance, public relations, personnel administration, and outdoor recreation programs.

Working knowledge in waterfowl and/or wetland management.

Two years of experience in assigning and supervising the work of assistants and staff members.

Two years of professional experience in budget forecasting, analysis, and/or monitoring.

Three years of extensive knowledge of farm operations including equipment maintenance and operation, seeding, chemical and fertilizer application.

Burn Boss Certification (Wildland firefighter 130/190).

One year of welding experience.

Employment Conditions

Completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.

Appropriate, valid Class A Commercial driver’s license with airbrakes designation.

Ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.

Ability to obtain pesticide applicator’s license within 6 months of employment.

Ability to obtain Burn Boss certification within 1 year of employment.

Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year‑round basis.

Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and material utilization in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds.

Ability to lift, carry and transport loads exceeding sixty pounds.

Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certifications within 6 months of employment.
