Overview
Position Overview

Houston Airport System (HAS) Division maintains self‑performed maintenance services across IAH, HOU, and EFD airports. The Maintenance Mechanic I prevents mechanical failure, identifies and corrects safety hazards, and inspects, repairs, cleans, and maintains a variety of equipment including pumps, boilers, air conditioning units, plumbing fixtures, and machinery.

Responsibilities

Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrication, and repairs on machinery such as pumps, boilers, air conditioning units, meters, air compressors, backhoes, incinerators, plumbing, trucks, and tractors.

Use hand tools and special equipment such as welding torches to test, repair, and maintain buildings’ physical plants and equipment.

Drive to and from work sites as required.

Report unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment.

Maintain records of maintenance and repair work performed.

Weld joints and pipes.

Obtain all required security badge access, including Custom Border Patrol access, within six months of hire.

Working Conditions
Position involves significant physical exertion: climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds), and assuming awkward positions for long periods. Exposure to heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, chemicals, and minor physical trauma (cuts, bruises, burns) is routine. Fine eye‑hand coordination is required for calibrated tasks.

Minimum Requirements
Educational Requirements

Specialized training in mechanical or electronic maintenance, typically up to 18 months of education or training beyond high school level.

Experience Requirements

No prior experience required.

License Requirements

Valid Texas driver’s license; compliance with City of Houston driving policy.

May require a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Preferences

Preference to eligible veteran applicants meeting all qualifications and in accordance with Executive Order 1‑6.

Selection/Skills Tests Required
The selection process includes application review, interview, and a potential skills assessment test administered by the department.

Safety Impact Position
Yes – position is subject to random drug testing. For promotional or assignment positions, a drug test is required.

Pay Grade
Pay Grade: 8

Salary Information
Salary is based on candidate qualifications and comparable employee rates within the classification.
