Specimen Technician - Hospital
Location: Normal, IL

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (hours may vary)

Pay range: $17.20 - $22.34 per hour. Salary offers are based on relevant skills, training, experience, education, and certifications. Eligible candidates may receive an annual performance bonus.

Responsibilities

Prepare patient specimens for hospital clients and facilitate courier pickup.

Represent Quest Diagnostics to customers with positive daily interactions (face‑to‑face and/or telephone).

Prepare and arrange all stat testing needs, research pending results, alert Hospital IT to communication failures, and accept and troubleshoot incoming calls to the Hospital Lab from Quest Diagnostics facilities.

Demonstrate proficiency in test ordering policies, procedures, specimen requirements, Care 360, and compliance/legal requirements.

Troubleshoot and problem‑solve client issues related to the area of responsibility.

Communicate and collaborate effectively with the Hospital Lab Manager, Quest Diagnostics sales team, and other functions in the organization.

Relay client concerns to Quest Diagnostics supervisor and sales; participate in sales/operations review of account.

Communicate information regarding problem‑solving with specimens, test cancellations, testing requirements, and billing requirements with hospital staff, such as phlebotomy, outpatient draw centers, laboratory managers, department supervisors, Hospital IT Analysts, physicians, nurses, and pathologists.

Develop understanding of company processes and client expectations.

Develop understanding of compliance policies related to test ordering.

Research test ordering information on translation tables, computer systems, and directory of services.

Understand the complex relationship between test(s) ordered and specimen received.

Complete all required written documentation legibly and within the assigned timeframe.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Medical background that includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.

Previous laboratory, customer service, or hospital experience.

Skills
The position requires demonstrated data entry skills to effectively utilize both the Quest Diagnostics system and the hospital client systems.
