Position Summary
The Middle School Social Studies/Writing Teacher at Santa Fe South Middle School is a mission-driven educator who believes strong literacy skills and historical understanding empower students to think critically about the world around them. This teacher delivers rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that integrates social studies content with analytical writing. Through the study of history, civics, geography, and economics, students develop the ability to analyze sources, construct evidence-based arguments, and communicate ideas clearly in writing. The ideal candidate embraces coaching and feedback, collaborates closely with colleagues, and continuously refines their instructional practice to improve student outcomes.
Responsibilities
Plan and deliver rigorous instruction aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies and ELA Writing
Design lessons that integrate historical content knowledge with writing skill development
Teach students to analyze primary and secondary sources and construct evidence-based written arguments
Provide explicit instruction in writing processes including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing
Incorporate academic vocabulary, grammar, and language conventions into daily instruction
Create a structured, engaging classroom environment that supports strong classroom culture and maximizes learning time
Guide students in analyzing historical events, concepts, and processes through writing
Support students in examining multiple perspectives, cause-and-effect relationships, and continuity and change over time
Provide frequent opportunities for extended writing, short constructed responses, and research-based projects
Facilitate structured discussions, debates, and inquiry-based activities that lead to analytical writing
Implement formative and summative assessments aligned to writing and social studies standards
Provide timely, actionable feedback to strengthen student writing and content understanding
Analyze student work and performance data to inform instruction and intervention
Participate in regular data meetings and professional learning communities
Collaborate with grade-level and content teams to plan instruction and align expectations
Build strong relationships with students and families to support academic and personal growth
Contribute positively to campus culture and school initiatives
Participate in professional development, coaching cycles, and continuous improvement efforts
Qualifications
Valid Oklahoma teaching certification (or ability to obtain certification) in Social Studies, History, English, or a related field
Demonstrated knowledge of Oklahoma Academic Standards for Grades 6–8 Social Studies and ELA Writing
Commitment to high expectations and measurable student achievement
Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with students and families
Willingness to embrace coaching, feedback, and continuous professional growth
Experience teaching middle school students, preferred
