Accounting Manager - Operational Finance (Des Moines)

Position Description
Manage overall day-to-day activity of office accounting department and oversight of all office accounting staff.
Reports to: Financial Manager, Operational Finance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Create a supportive environment to develop a high performing finance team, provide training opportunities, and engage in mentoring relationships.
Lead accountants and other related team members, provide timely performance feedback and contribute to performance appraisals during the annual performance cycle, utilizing talent management systems.
Review quarterly account reconciliations and make recommendations for improvement to the Financial Manager.
Review monthly G&A monitor and assist the Financial Manager in updating forecast.
Analyze and update estimating recovery monitor and review with the Financial Manager and Chief Estimator.
Manage petty cash, payroll, and joint venture bank accounts and reconciliations.
Review and approve monthly journal entries.
Assist in the resolution of daily office issues including vendor disputes, escalated to the Financial Manager as appropriate.
Review all office contracts and lease agreements prior to submission to the Financial Manager for approval.
Ensure builders risk log is complete and insurance coverage is in place.
Review and approve orders from external suppliers.
Review charitable contribution requests and ensure compliance with policy.
Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field, and 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Construction industry experience preferred.
Supervisory/management of a small team preferred.
Thorough application of accounting principles (i.e., journal entries, general ledger).
Analytic ability to review and assess financial data, interpret trends, and recognize inconsistencies.
Understands accounting implications of various contract terms.
Demonstrates understanding of cash flows and implements procedures to optimize interest income.
Knowledgeable of policies and standards to ensure compliance while identifying financial risks.
Displays actions related to profitability and risk management and effectively communicates risk management issues.
Exercises independent judgment and discretion with the ability to identify problems and initiate corrective action.
Applies innovation to offer and implement suggestions to improve overall operations.
Manages many activities, requests, and short‑cycle deadlines simultaneously.
Observes performance and effectively provides performance feedback.
Proficient with financial system applications, MS Excel, and MS Office.
Self‑motivated, adaptable, and flexible to operate with minimal direction and little or no supervision while working in a complex and changing environment.
Professional written and verbal communication skills.
High degree of organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Some travel.
