
Registered Nurse (RN), Float Maternal Child

Job Summary
Organize and administer individualized age‑specific professional care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital in support of medical care. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and the mission and vision of Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Department of Nursing. Practices in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics for Nurses, Department of Health Regulations, TJC requirements and other regulatory agencies. Participates in patient teaching and discharge planning. Participates in unit Performance Improvement evaluation activities.
Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited school or university
2 years L&D experience and at least 1 year of Postpartum/Nursery experience
Willing to float in Antepartum/L&D/Nursery
Completion of all orientation requirements of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center
Successful completion of all orientation programs
Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree or currently matriculating
Certifications and Licenses Required
Current Registered Nurse License in the state of New Jersey
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association upon hire
ACLS certification
Scheduling Requirements
Full‑Time
Days
11a - 11p shifts
12.5 hour shifts
37.5 hours weekly
Essential Functions
Assesses, stabilizes and observes infant in DR.
Weighs infant and gives meds after vaginal delivery.
Promotes maternal‑infant bonding and supports breastfeeding in the LDR if the mother desires.
Demonstrates an ability to effectively interpret fetal monitor tracings and takes appropriate nursing action based on same.
Handles emergent situations well using good critical thinking skills and good nursing judgment.
Demonstrates the ability to effectively triage patients in the PET unit by effectively assessing, prioritizing and managing patients in a timely manner.
Delegates appropriately to the OB CC under her direction.
Performs the role of circulating nurse for vaginal and c‑section deliveries.
Serves as scrub nurse when necessary.
Recognizes each individual couple's birth plan and supports the same within the boundaries of the standard of care.
Recognizes significant labor events and communicates this information to Obstetric, Pediatric and Anesthesia staff in an accurate and timely manner.
Handles emergent situations well, using good critical thinking and good nursing judgement.
Supports the current philosophy of the Departments of OB‑GYN/Pediatrics of CBMC by compliance with the established nursing standard of care for the obstetrical patient.
