Educational and Experience Requirement
High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent with at least three years of work experience. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Acts out the part of a patient in specific and defined clinical encounters in order to help the SHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine medical students practice data gathering, communication, and clinical examination skills.
Primary Responsibilities
Responsible for memorizing scripts detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms for presentation during simulated learning situations.
Present case information in a standardized manner, as elicited by students during simulated interactive patient history and/or medical examinations.
Portray a role consistently and accurately as trained by the Standardized Patient (SP) Coordinator, Clinical Skills Director and clinical skills staff while remaining in character as trained when responding to student questions.
Work in a professional manner when interacting with students, faculty, fellow SP’s and staff.
Receive ongoing feedback in order to modify performance behaviors accordingly.
Memorize scripts accurately and in a timely manner. Scripts will be provided to the SP’s in advance of the training session, most often via email.
Receive physical and verbal examinations by osteopathic medical students.
Give honest written and/or verbal feedback to students as needed for an event.
Monitor other SP’s for quality assurance and communicate with the SP Coordinator about portrayal inconsistencies.
Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments.
Maintain confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors, and feedback evaluations.
Receive training to accurately and consistently portray physical findings and deliver specific information for given scenarios.
Will be used periodically in lectures for demonstrations and in lab sessions as the students learn how to do a physical and osteopathic structural exam.
Play a vital role in helping develop the students’ patient centered and clinical skills.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Must be familiar with common laboratory equipment and instruction and research curriculum. Must be able to follow oral and written instruction and work a modified schedule to accommodate classes and special projects. May require frequent contact with students, staff, and researchers. Expected to arrive on time to scheduled time for cases/and or assessments. May work as an SP for a test pilot project.

An interest in training physicians of the future.
Willing to provide feedback to students that are learning history and physical exam skills.
Participate in live in‑person encounters with students.
Attend Zoom Trainings.
Understand encounters will be videotaped for medical student education purposes only.
SPs are required to be reliable, flexible, follow direction(s) and recall information.
Maintain confidentiality of cases and student information.
Opportunities to participate in shorter, non‑scripted simulation and ultrasound sessions.
