Hashtags are everywhere, and it seems you can’t go more than a moment without seeing one plastered over a billboard, shining brightly out from the footer of a magazine advertisement or beaming pride of place on a primetime television show. But if you want to maximise the effectiveness of these simple but powerful marketing tools, there’s a couple of things that you need to remember.
First, they’re pretty common. About a quarter of all tweets contain a hashtag, which means if you’re going to use them, you need to get really creative. Don’t jump on the bandwagon and use a hashtag that’s already well established, and never misuse a trending hashtag for your own (evil) purpose.
Two, studies have shown that tweets that contain one or two hashtags generate a higher rate of engagement than tweets that use no hashtags. However, tweets with more than two hashtags generate a negative rate of return, so, as is usually the case, with these bad boys less is very much more.
This infographic from MiHi Digital proposes 4 simple tips for maximising ROI on hashtag use on Twitter, including a mobile user timing suggestion that, while obvious with hindsight, looks eye-openingly lucrative.
