Millennials are kind of a big deal, certainly in the social media space, and they present a unique opportunity to brands and businesses looking to market directly to the so-called Generation Y.
Did you know, for example, that 57 percent of millennials follow brands on social media exclusively for competitions and free stuff? What if I told you that too much posting by brands on Facebook and Twitter is a major irritant for Gen Y’ers, and that they find branded hashtags desperate and annoying?
Forcing these folks to sign in using Facebook Connect or other social plugins is also a big mistake. However, it’s not all bad news: get everything else right and you might see a major increase in sales – 50 percent of millennials have used social media to inform ahead of a purchase.
