Charlie Sheen (@charliesheen) has turned to Twitter to assist with his surreal (and more than a little tragic) campaign of self-publicity, following a series of strange and unusual events in his life.

And in less than 12 hours, he’s picked up an army of over 675,000 750,000 rubberneckers fans.

And why not? His very first tweet certainly did not disappoint.

Thanks to some celebrity endorsements, at this rate he should breach the million mark by the end of the week. And God-only knows how he secured the verified @charliesheen profile name so last-minute. Perhaps a little money changed hands.

This is a train wreck that is hard to avoid – and to be honest, sympathise with. Can Twitter help Sheen resurrect his career? His life? His public appeal? It seems unlikely unless there’s a little bit (read: absolute ton) of personal development everywhere else, but as we’ve discussed before – if you’re a celebrity desperately in need of PR, you might as well just write it yourself. And there are few better places to do that than on Twitter.
