Ricky Gervais Returns To “Pointless” Twitter

English comedian Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) has reactivated his Twitter account, despite labeling the platform as “pointless” and a “device for teenagers” after his first attempt on the micro-blogging network in December 2009.

Gervais quit Twitter just a few weeks later – on January 9 2010 he wrote, “I am sorry, but I am going to stop these tweets because I don’t see the point. Please follow my blog at rickygervais.com.”

That tweet is still live, and viewable here.

At the time Gervais expanded on his feelings about Twitter on his blog, and was very critical about the value of the service.

“As you may know I’ve stopped with Twitter. I just don’t get it I’m afraid. I’m sure it’s fun as a networking device for teenagers but there’s something a bit undignified about adults using it. Particularly celebrities who seem to be showing off by talking to each other in public. If I want to tell a friend, famous or otherwise what I had to eat this morning, I’ll text them. And since I don’t need to make new virtual friends, it seemed a bit pointless to be honest.”

Clearly something has changed his mind, as Gervais resumed tweeting on September 29 (2011) with a slightly sheepish, “Hello. Anybody there?” and has been updating at a fairly prolific rate ever since, publishing a heady 16 tweets yesterday alone.

His posts are, as you might expect, still fairly barbed. “My tweets are now displayed on rickygervais.com to prove it’s me. Tell your friends. Not your real friends obviously. Your virtual ones,” he wrote on September 30, adding “I fucking love twitter now. I’m still not sure of the point, or how it will end, but its fun trying to work it out. Just like life really.”

Gervais has also written about his return to Twitter in a new post on his blog.

“I am so useless at Twitter it’s embarrassing. Like every other piece of technology, I don’t feel I’m getting the most out of it yet. At the moment I am using Twitter to distribute some of the monged up photos I have taken of myself. This is all I am capable of at the moment but bear with me. I love playing and I’m am sure I will hit on something that benefits the world soon,” before signing off his post as Ricky “The Tweetmeister General” Gervais.
