Hey Brazil, Tell Facebook To Step Aside – Here Comes Twitter!

Add to its ever-expanding list of international offices, Twitter announced its next destination: Brazil.

Looks like they got over their little $300k lawsuit misunderstanding from last year, hmm?

According to Reuters, Twitter has decided to take advantage of its “40 million subscribers in [the] social network-obsessed nation” by opening an office in Sao Paulo. And guess who else has a second home there? Facebook.

“We believe our new office in Brazil will allow us to get closer to the users and show the value of our platform,” the company’s new country manager for Brazil, Guilherme Ribenboim, told Reuters in a recent interview.

“Brazil has rather mature Internet and advertisement markets. Our audience is very big and active,” he said. “We are going to try to monetize it.”

Brazil is already Twitter’s second-biggest market after the United States in terms of accounts and ranks fifth by usage, ac cording to the Paris-based market intelligence firm Semiocast.

Establishing a solid foothold in Brazil right now makes sense for Twitter, of course. One way to take the potential market there is through sporting events and the World Cup will be there in 2014 and the Olympic Games will be there in 2016.

“The World Cup and the Olympic Games offer huge opportunities to leverage and show the potential of Twitter,” said Ribenboim, 40, a former Yahoo! VP for Latin America. “It is already happening. We are talking (to advertisers) looking for opportunities, strategies.”

It will be interesting seeing Twitter and Facebook go head-to-head as they each try to capture this market. Do you think we will see more direct competition between the two in the coming months?
