"I do think that the quality which makes a man want to write and be read is essentially a desire for self-exposure and is masochistic. Like one of those guys who has a compulsion to take his thing out and show it on the street." - James Jones

Morning Reading List, 07.11.08

july4 047.JPG

Good Morning Washington. I really doubt you're going to guess what local trail the above picture was taken on, but knock yourselves out.

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line or let us know in the tips box below.

We've got your morning mix of media Muesli after the jump...

Will Washington finally get its own reality show?!? Well, well...does Philippe Reines have a....girlfriend?!? On the TamCam, see Robert Gibbs' sorta odd justification for annoying the networks with the Obama-speech-move to Invesco Field. We hear that "Meet the Press" will have a big announcement about next week's guest at the end of this Sunday's show (which features: Carly Fiorina, Kathleen Sebelius, Harold Ford, Andrea Mitchell, Mike Murphy). Good luck to Dan Reilly and Meg Little -- or as Mike Allen calls them, "The Ben & Sally" of the new generation -- who are getting married in Vermont this weekend. His Extreme-ness gives "A quick case study in how the media covers the burgeoning bris industry." Washingtonian has pics from "The Washingtonian Best Of Party." Are you one of the 50 most influential female bloggers? Well, well, well...the haters! Most of your advice to Marcus Brauchli was, well, just plain mean (although we like two: Stop all the Olympic coverage and do a Playboy spread with the parts covered in BROW-klee). It's the birthday of the Washingtonian's Garrett Graff (also: John Adams). E&P's Greg Mitchell looks at "'Nuts' Case: How Did Media Cover Jesse Jackson's Choice of Words?" "Chuck Todd, On Facial Hair & French Horns. "For most of you, your opinion of Rev. Jesse Jackson has changed for the worse over the past decade. Today's "Angry Journalist" rant of the day: "I'm trawling job sites at my desk at work." Check out today's White House Photo of the Day from Time.

Today's FishbowlDC comment of the day (with regards to yesterday's post on "Who's Going To Netroots Convention?"): Reader leslieann44 writes, "Will keep my eyes out for Garrett, thanks for the tip ;-) Along with my colleagues Jen and Ben from New Media Strategies, I will be heading that way... stopping off at Right Online to say hello to NMS colleagues Soren and Bill, too. And, while we were out of DC roaming around with online friends, Jen and I thought it would be fun to stop off in SF to take part in the BlogHer festivities over the weekend. Join us if you can keep up! Jen's write-up here: Definitely will be tweeting all the way... www.Twitter.com/leslieann44 (Leslie)
www.Twitter.com/HumanFolly (Jen)." Christina Bellantoni will also be there. Keep the FishbowlDC discussion going by dropping your comments here.

REVOLVING DOOR

  • WPNI's Jonathan Krim sent an email to staffers announcing, "senior producer Amy Kovac is ascending to the newly titled position of Local Community Editor. In that capacity, she'll be overseeing our day-to-day community publishing efforts in Loudoun and supervising that team, as well as working with me as we build out our strategy for other locales."

  • The Washington Business Journal's editor Mike Mills sent an email announcing, "Missy Frederick will be joining the Washington Business Journal as a reporter covering retail, tourism and hospitality. Missy comes to us from The Washington Examiner, where since February 2007 she covered business issues ranging from federal contracting and IT to tourism and restaurants. Missy also is a theatre critic for DCist, a role she will continue to play in her spare time. ... Missy's first day is July 28."

    NEWSPAPERS

  • The Pew Weekly News Interest Index shows, "Public Tunes Out Press Coverage of McCain"

  • Romenesko has Dana Milbank's answer to reader's question, "I was wondering if you have a hard time keeping good sources?"

  • Bloomberg reports, "New York Times Co. dropped the most in almost 10 years after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. lowered its earnings estimates for the third-largest U.S. newspaper publisher as advertising revenue deteriorates."

    TV

  • "The McCain campaign restricts press access."

  • A tipster writes in, "Have you noticed that Brian Lamb no longer hosts the Washington Journal on C-SPAN? He used to host the show every Friday, but has not in months. He is still doing Q&A, his weekend show, but that is it. Probably part of slowing easing himself into retirement."

  • The Los Angeles Times reports, "The news that the Rev. Jesse Jackson took a crude swipe at Sen. Barack Obama this week put renewed scrutiny on the relationship between the veteran civil rights activist and Democratic presidential contender. But Jackson's vulgar criticism of Obama came close to going unreported. Jackson made the comments to a guest before an interview on Sunday's 'Fox & Friends,' whispering that Obama was 'talking down to black people' and that Jackson wanted to 'cut his nuts off.' The comments went unnoticed in the control room, Bill Shine, Fox News' senior vice president for programming, said Thursday." Check out 23/6's round-up video from it here.

  • One reader says, "LAT buries lede on 'cut his nuts off' story. 'On Tuesday, a staff member in the digital department e-mailed Jackson's comments to a producer for 'The O'Reilly Factor,' who was vacationing in France.' An O'Reilly producer vacationing in FRANCE? On second thought, he did lift the boycott... and made reference to his staff's Francophilia... Maybe David Carr will investigate."

  • Media Matters reports, "Hannity distorted Clinton's remarks about Mandela, falsely cited it as part of 'a series of attacks' on McCain's 'military record'"

  • Washington Times' Tim Lemke writes, "I have avoided weighing in on the reports of the shockingly low TV ratings for the Nationals on MASN, in part because I really didn't have much to add. All of the explanations we've seen, from the poor play of the team, the infancy of the network and the relative lack of visibility are probably all accurate. There can't be one specific reason that only 9,000 households are tuning in to games. But I do have one theory that hasn't really been touched on elsewhere. It is my belief that in most major league cities, watching baseball games has simply become part of the basic summertime lifestyle for many people."

    MAGAZINES

  • Harper's Ken Silverstein writes, "Soon after posting my recent articles about the large speaking fees commanded by top journalists and pundits, I was contacted by someone who had once hoped to book Newsweek's Fareed Zakaria for an engagement. My source contacted Royce Carlton, the speaker’s bureau that represents Zakaria. My source was told that Newsweek's man would be available at the rate of $75,000 for a one-hour speech. Not to mention first-class airfare and car service."

    NEWS NOTES

  • AJR reports, "A growing number of journalism schools lead students on reporting trips abroad."

  • A release from yesterday announced, "SPJ leaders are on Capitol Hill today and Friday to lobby Congress for the passage of a federal shield law. The contingent is organizing in the nation's capital to meet with some of the federal shield law's biggest supporters and some who have yet to give their full backing to the proposed legislation. The group's lobbying comes at a most opportune time as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced this week that the shield law legislation will come to the floor for a vote before the August recess."

  • StopBigMedia.com said in an email yesterday, "In May, the Senate voted to stop Big Media by passing a 'resolution of disapproval,' which rejected the Federal Communications Commission's latest effort to consolidate local media. We won in the Senate. We can win again in the House. To do this, we need to get 100 co-sponsors in the next 100 days to support the House version of the bill (H.J. Res. 79). This summer, we'll be delivering hundreds of thousands of petitions at in-district meetings with key members of Congress. Make sure your voice is heard. Help Us Get 100 Co-Sponsors in 100 Days. Sign the Petition Today"
