WaPoers Emote on Paper’s Sale

Hollywood on the Potomac talked with WaPo insiders yesterday “while they were still in their shock space” over news that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the paper from the Graham family.

PostPartisan’s Jonathan Capehart was all set to go on the air at MSNBC, where he’s a contributor, when he learned about the surprise announcement. So he couldn’t dial into the 4:30 p.m. call. “I read the email from Katharine Weymouth around 4:45 under the NBC marquee on 49th Street and screamed, ‘WHAT?!’”

Food critic Tim Carmen was on vacation, but told Hollywood on the Potomac he’s good with the news. “…I can think of few owners I’d rather have than Jeff Bezos. He knows about Internet commerce, and he knows enough to say he doesn’t know much about news-gathering.” Bonus in Carmen’s mind is that Bezos is keeping the current editors. “These are all positive signs to me,” he said.

They couldn’t get in touch with anyone else, so they turned to some “former ‘posties.’” Seems they were both of one mind: Chuck Conoci, former Reliable Source columnist: “I’m stunned…” and Annie Groer, also a former Reliable Source columnist: “Like everyone else, I was stunned…”

More reaction to the sale in FishbowlDC’s Morning Chatter and post yesterday.
