Dr. Who Producer Suffers Through Early LA Christmas

Steven Moffat (pictured), the newest producer of long-running BBC-TV series Dr. Who, is coming in with a bang on Christmas Day. Although the program has done a Yuletide-themed episode on present day since 2005, Saturday is the first time such an installment will be same-day premiered on BBC America.

Moffat, via the New York TimesArts Beat,” shares the very un-Christmas-like LA circumstances that led to the 2010 episode’s creation earlier this year, in April.

I’d flown to Los Angeles while we were going on interviews [for the United States season premiere of Doctor Who] and got stuck there by the volcano. LA is just the least Christmas-y place on earth.

So I turned up the air-conditioning and played Christmas music to try to get in the frame of mind. But I’m used to thinking on different planets. Thinking about a different time of year wasn’t so bad. It was the smallest amount of time travel Doctor Who ever had to do.

Saturday’s episode, entitled “A Christmas Carol”, re-imagines the Charles Dickens classic through the eyes of Dr. Who (Matt Smith) and Scrooge-like industrialist (Michael Gambon). Ho, ho, who!
