A few changes at Newsweek/The Daily Beast today. According to a memo from Tina Brown, David Freedlander is joining as senior political correspondent, Winston Ross is now a national correspondent and Adam Auriemma has been promoted to senior editor.
Freedlander comes to Newsweek/The Daily Beast from The New York Observer, where he oversaw Politicker and wrote features. Ross has been contributing to Newsweek since 2002 and Auriemma has been homepage editor since 2009.
The full note from Brown is after the jump.
We’re very pleased to announce the following new additions to our staff and a well-deserved promotion:
David Freedlander, the editor of the New York Observer’s Politicker.com and a feature writer for the newspaper, is joining us as a Senior Political Correspondent. He’ll help us plan our political coverage through the remainder of the 2012 presidential campaign, write daily on the Beast with a focus on the Romney/Ryan ticket and contribute occasionally to the magazine. David, a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism, has significant experience covering politics. In addition to his work for the Observer, he was managing editor of City Hall and The Capitol, and was a staff writer for amNew York.
Longtime Newsweek and Daily Beast stringer Winston Ross joins the NewsBeast staff as a National Correspondent based in the Pacific Northwest. Winston got his first Newsweek assignment a decade ago when he was a reporter for the Spokesman-Review in Washington State: a bizarre standoff between a family of Idaho survivalists and sheriff’s deputies. Since then, he has written for us about a variety of subjects: the mystery of severed human feet washing up on the shore near British Columbia, various accused killers, the epidemic of PTSD among soldiers on an Army base near Seattle, and the soldier accused of massacring Aghan civilians. For the past decade, Winston has been a reporter for the Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Last but certainly not least, the versatile, stylish and always-reliable Adam Auriemma is promoted to Senior Editor. In his new role, Adam will work closely with Deidre to help run the Beast’s daily news operations, driving coverage on breaking news and designated topic areas as he did with stories as varied as the London Olympics and the Penn State sex abuse scandal. He’ll also collaborate closely with Allison McNearney and our team of homepage editors and researcher/reporters to keep the homepage and The Cheat Sheet fresh, engaging, and savvy. Adam also serves as a weekend editor for the Beast, helping assign and edit news coverage on Saturdays and Sundays as well as managing the digital rollout of Newsweek.
Please join us in congratulating Adam and in welcoming aboard David and Winston.
