Local Connectivity & 3D Printing: How It Got Us Here and Where It Will Take Us
The evolution of disruptive tech relies on new user introduction and collaboration. In recent years, improving 3D printing technology has caught the attention of both businesses and hobbyists. Potential users need local, first-hand access to 3D printing to spur adoption and innovation. Small businesses need the opportunity to beta test 3D printing, to see how its integration can improve their current processes. A demand for 3D printed products has enabled small, professional organizations with ten or fewer 3D printers to expand and serve new markets. Local collaborative platforms like makerspaces are breeding grounds for inspiration, creativity and accomplishment. Democratized 3D printing has local workshops like these to thank for where it is today. The maker community possesses an enormous amount of human capital, that if channeled, will be a catalyst for the growth of 3D printing. Remote, online service bureaus simply do not allow new users to appreciate the amazing potential of additive manufacturing first-hand. Local platforms like service bureaus, product development firms and makerspaces are an integral part of accelerating 3D printing's evolution.

Materials for 3D Printing
The range of materials used for 3D printing (3DP) includes virtually all materials. Materials must be suitable for processing in the specific 3DP technology including possible post-processing, and they must satisfy the service performance requirements. This presentation deals with materials for 3DP. First is consideration of materials that are best suited for specific common 3DP processes. A brief review describes how material properties are quantified. A review of the mechanical properties of AM parts is given for polymer, metal and ceramic systems. Broad categorization of the microstructural factors impacting service mechanical properties will be presented.

Industrial 3D Printing via Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and Plastics Laser Sintering
Laser sintering is an additive manufacturing (AM) or industrial 3D-printing process which is shifting the way we think about manufacturing -- from “manufacturing-driven design” to “design-driven manufacturing.” The process enables the construction of highly-complex geometries that are unachievable via traditional manufacturing methods and the adoption of the technology is being used in aerospace, automotive, tooling, consumer, industrial, medical and dental applications, for example, for prototype and end-use production parts alike.

Leveraging 3D Printing Through Innovative Design for Space Exploration
Spaceflight is bounded by the environmental extremes of gravity, pressure, vacuum, radiation, plus high and low temperatures. Additional impediments are imposed by the costs of a rocket launch that has driven payload design toward miniaturized size and away from traditional low density-high cubic volume objects. Many of these challenges, however, have been reconciled and can even be leveraged with additive manufacturing, and more importantly with innovative 3D design techniques. This session aims to highlight some of the challenges and solutions, both in the additive manufacture of spaceflight hardware on the ground as well as for systems on orbit around the Earth.

Growing Objects
We will discuss our obsession with the way patterns form in nature and our work adapting those methods for design. What can we learn from the way corals aggregate or leaf veins grow? And what happens when we use computer simulation to play with those mechanisms to make something unnatural? We use digital fabrication to transform these experiments into real products. This not only allows us to produce complex, one-of-a-kind products that would be almost impossible to produce traditionally, but also allows us to open up these experiments to the public as online customization apps. By combining algorithmically generated objects and on-demand manufacturing techniques, we can create one-of-a-kind, mass-customized designs. In this talk, we will discuss our inspiration, process, and vision for the future.

3D Printing and the Future (or Demise) of Intellectual Property
This presentation explores the intersection -- and some would say the head-on collision -- between 3D printing and intellectual property. Illustrating this high level and entertaining presentation with examples of advances in 3D printing and materials, John Hornick explores the implications for intellectual property and the world and addresses challenging questions, such as: How will the democratization of manufacturing affect IP? How can protection from infringement be balanced with the ability to innovate? Does IP stimulate or stifle innovation in the 3DP space? Is the existing IP regime up to the task, or is IP fundamentally in conflict with a 3D printed world? Who will win the tug of war between IP and open innovation? Will IP survive, or are we headed for a worldwide open technology community?

Shape Reality
Digital fabrication systems are only as good in the end as the 3D design and models they are given, which in turn are only as good as the modeling software that is used, which in turn is fundamentally defined by the geometric core that drives the system. Today, 3D modeling software and CAD is largely still oriented toward visualization, planning and design, not shape fabrication. Furthermore, and contrary to some lines of thought, geometric computation, shape modeling and simulation research and development is still in its infancy. In an almost perfect illustration of these points - additive manufacturing hardware currently can outperform commercial modeling software and has been able to do so for some time (digital hardware leading software has not been true since the inception of the PC in the late 70s). The session will present what is being done at the edge of 3D modeling applications and development. It will also showcase current examples and outcomes in research and development and what needs to happen for software to catch up and lead hardware forward.

The Promise of Distributed Manufacturing
Distributed Manufacturing is being handled as the "killer app" to fulfill the promise 3D Printing holds. The idea that anybody, anywhere could order spare parts to be printed on demand is enough to capture imaginations and has the promise to save lives. But is it all hype? Is it even needed? And if there is some truth to the concept, what are the barriers? What do we need to learn and what solutions need to be developed to make distributed manufacturing a reality? What can we learn from aligned industries? Plus, what are the implication: Does this mean an end to supply chains as we know them?
