David Kenny Named Chairman And CEO Of The Weather Channel Cos. (TVNewser)
David Kenny has been named chairman and CEO of The Weather Channel Cos., which operates The Weather Channel on TV, radio, and online, as well as WSI, a weather-forecasting and solutions provider. paidContent: In a surprise move, The Weather Channel Cos. is swapping out CEOs. Kenny is replacing Mike Kelly as CEO effective immediately; the Akamai-Digitas vet will also be chairman of the company, owned by a consortium of Bain Capital, The Blackstone Group, and NBC Universal. THR: Most recently president of tech firm Akamai, he will "spearhead the further development of a comprehensive, integrated strategy to accelerate its growth in the United States and internationally," the company said. AdAge / MediaWorks: When former Digitas CEO Kenny pulled his hat from the ring in the Yahoo! CEO search, he hinted that he had other options to consider. Multichannel News: Kenny was previously president of content delivery network provider Akamai. Prior to that, he co-founded and served as managing partner of VivaKi, the combined worldwide media and digital arm of Publicis Groupe. B&C: The outgoing Kelly had been president and CEO since 2009, and he will remain as a special adviser to the CEO and board of directors. Adweek: The Weather Channel has a history of selecting chief executives from outside the traditional television ranks. Business Insider / Silicon Alley Insider: Hiring Kenny as CEO would seem to suggest that Yahoo! will not buy The Weather Channel. Why would Kenny take the job if he thought it would just end up as a division of Yahoo!?
