Jill Abramson: I Certainly Don't Want To Be In A War With Arianna Huffington (Business Insider / The Wire)
It's not entirely clear why New York Times executive editor Bill Keller suddenly stepped down Thursday to be replaced by Jill Abramson, but it's hard not to conclude that his recent war of words with Arianna Huffington had something to do with it. The Takeaway: Abramson: "I've been managing editor for eight years, working in a close partnership with Bill Keller. I think it helps a lot that both of us have been correspondents and know the up and down cycle of working for a long time on an important story. It can be sort of a manic-depressive work cycle, and I think it does make you understand some of the pressures that our reporters are under, which have greatly increased with the warp speed of the news cycle these days." Poynter: Several New York Times staffers objected to Keller's recent controversial columns about the media, which he wrote knowing he would shortly step down from his leadership post, according to reports. TheWrap.com / Media Alley: Abramson takes the helm of The New York Times' editorial operations at a moment when the paper's future depends not on the stories it breaks, but on making the Internet pay for them.
