HLN #1 News Network on Friday in Younger Viewers

HLN continues to put up huge numbers for its coverage of the Casey Anthony trial; in daytime and primetime.

  • HLN was the most-watched cable news network for the day (6am-2am) with younger viewers averaging 252K; and second, behind Fox News, in total viewers averaging 820K.
  • A 5pm re-cap of the Anthony trial hosted by Vinnie Politan was the #1 show in its time period in both total viewers (1.253M) and younger viewers (319K).
  • The 6pm & 7pm hours were #1 in their time periods in younger viewers.
  • “Dr. Drew” at 9pm (379K) and “Joy Behar” at 10pm (321K) were both #1 in their time periods in younger viewers, topping FNC’s “Hannity” at 9pm, and a re-air of the 5pm “On the Record” special about the Anthony Weiner scandal at 10pm.

Those two wins can be attributed in part to a strong lead-in from Nancy Grace whose 8pm show was second behind “The O’Reilly Factor” in both younger viewers and total viewers.

NYT’s Brian Stelter wrote today about the Anthony effect on HLN’s programming and ratings, which has turned the CNN network into a new kind of CourtTV, which Time Warner turned into truTV in 2008. TruTV is carrying the Anthony trial in the hours before HLN branded “In Session.”
