TV Guide: Meredith Vieira To Leave NBC’s ‘Today’ Later This Year

TV Guide reports that NBC “Today” co-anchor Meredith Vieira is expected to leave the program once her contract expires later this year.

Vieira has been in discussions with NBC News executives for several months about extending her deal, which is up in September. But the co-anchor is said to be weary of the demanding early morning hours and is ready to move on. Vieira has often said that the health of her husband, who has battled multiple sclerosis and cancer, will be a factor in considering her future on the program.

A source familiar with the situation tell TVNewser that while Vieira’s contract is up in September, she has not made a decision about her future, and that discussions with NBC are ongoing.

Related: The Hollywood Reporter’s Lacey Rose and Marisa Guthrie report that Ann Curry, Natalie Morales, Savannah Guthrie and Erin Burnett are considered frontrunners to replace Vieira, in the event she leaves.

The New York TimesBrian Stelter writes that:

The possibility that Ms. Vieira would leave “Today” was heightened last year when she opted for a one-year contract extension rather than a long-term extension.

A spokesperson for “Today” says that “The TODAY show anchors are currently under contract and firmly in place.”

Vieira joined “Today” as co-anchor in 2006, and before that served as the moderator of the ABC syndicated program “The View.” Before “The View” she spent more than a decade at CBS News. She also serves as the host of the syndicated game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”
