WSJ: Sony Wants To Become a TV Provider

Right now if you want to pay for a cable package and get your Fox News or CNN fix, your choices are probably limited. You likely have one cable provider (Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox), you can go satellite (DirecTV, Dish) or if you are lucky there is a telco in town (Verizon Fios, AT&T UVerse).

According to the Wall Street Journal, there is a familiar player looking to get into the game: Sony.

Sony isn’t going to be laying fiber to people’s homes, or setting up satellite dishes however. The company wants to deliver TV channels over the Internet:

Sony is proposing to beam the channels over Internet connections to Sony-made devices, including PlayStation gaming consoles, TV sets and Blu-ray players, the people said…

Among the companies Sony has approached are Comcast’s NBCUniversal, Discovery Communications Inc., and News Corp., people familiar with the matter said. News Corp. also owns The Wall Street Journal.

Of course, as the WSJ notes, many big content companies are reluctant to sign on, given that Sony’s proposed service would be competing with their biggest customers. Would you consider a cable TV package from Sony if it offered a better value? let us know in the comments.
