Summary
The Photopheresis‑Infusion/Dermatology Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized care in the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of care for a variety of patients, including but not limited to adults undergoing outpatient procedures such as photopheresis therapy, outpatient infusions, transfusion of blood products, injections, blood collection, establishment and maintenance of intravenous access and therapeutic phlebotomy.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency – must be proficient in basic written and spoken English.

Graduate of a professionally accredited nursing school (ACEN or CCNE) or fulfilling equivalent requirements as outlined in VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6.

Possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or District of Columbia.

Individuals in a master's level bridge program may be appointed on a temporary basis and may convert to permanent appointment upon graduation.

Foreign nursing graduates must provide formal equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation accepted by VA such as ICD.

Grade determination requires meeting scope, education, and dimension criteria for the respective nursing level.

Physical requirements include regular bending, lifting 30 pounds or more, stooping, climbing, twisting, standing and walking continuously for up to 8 hours, pushing medication carts, and using both hands and legs.

Visual acuity must be correctable to a minimum of 13” to 16” for near vision and 20/50 in one eye, 20/100 in the other, with color discrimination.

Hearing aid permitted to respond to alarms.

Duties

Responsible for all nursing process elements when providing or supervising direct patient care on the N004 pay scale.

Coordinate patient education, self‑management and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.

Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes.

Participate in unit/program level quality improvement initiatives and customer service programs.

Provide competent, evidence‑based care to assigned patients and oversee licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants as appropriate.

Assist in directing nursing education, orientation, competencies and provide quality improvement consultation.

Provide pre‑procedural care: perform nursing assessment, confirm informed consent, manage venipuncture, ensure lab work is completed and communicated, and administer medications.

Deliver clear pre‑procedural teaching and review discharge instructions with written and verbal communication.

Maintain a safe working environment while handling drugs and medical waste.

Monitor infusion reactions and manage adverse events related to specific drugs.

Evaluate outcomes of evidence‑based decisions and practice changes for individuals, groups, and populations.

Document outcomes at program or service level.

Ensure patients receive appropriate scheduling for recurrent infusions or treatments.

Assist in Dermatology Clinic activities when cross‑trained, including patient positioning, time‑out process, surgery tray preparation, site marking, patient education, specimen collection and lab transport.

Maintain comprehensive and timely documentation in the electronic health record.

Perform any other duties assigned.

Preferred experience includes photopheresis, apheresis, dialysis and chemotherapy infusion.
