If you haven’t noticed, Twitter is slowly but surely taking over online, adding video and music to its already wildly popular service and attracting new users (their product) and advertisers (their pay day) in droves.
And just when you thought they were full to the brim with new business, the greedy little bird comes back out for more – and this time it appears they plan to target Foursquare’s worm.
How so? Well, Twitter is rumored to be working on local tweet discovery and once they’ve nailed THAT (and they will), how long till they start offering this service (with offers targeting local tweeters) to their advertisers? And that’s the EXACT value proposition Foursquare peddles.
All Things D reports that multiple sources have shared that “Twitter is in the process of testing a new feature that lets you discover tweets from people within a certain distance of your location.”
The idea is to surface relevant activity based on where you are in the world, serving up tweets from others around you — whether you follow them or not.
The feature, as I understand it, came out of the company’s recent hack week at the beginning of this month, where a few engineers worked on projects related to local discovery. A number of employees have been testing the feature in the Twitter app ever since.
Available for free on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Vizible is “the nearby photo app for Twitter that instantly gives you a bird’s eye view of what’s happening in your neighborhood.”
Find photos nearby by selecting a radius ranging from 1 mile to 100 miles away from your current location.
But the idea seems a bit more in-line with Peoplemelt, where you enter your location and it uses “a super intuitive map interface” to “find relevant content organised by time and location.”
You see, Twitter has a nasty reputation for duplicating others’ efforts. These instances could be coincidental, of course, but those odds are probably akin to rolling seven ten times in a row at a craps table.
But who knows, maybe Twitter is talking with one or both of these folks and we’ll hear news of more “aqui-hires” in the near future?
The one with the most to lose here, as we mentioned, is Foursquare.
We’re guessing when one weighs earning badges and mostly meaningless “mayorships” on Foursquare that one gets for actively checking in to places against the real-time, location-based offers that will pop up on Twitter when you’re nearby – there won’t be any more check-ins clogging up the Twitter stream. Why would anyone bother?
