Is Your Neighbor a Democrat? There’s an App For That

The US presidential elections are still over over 3 months away, but  apps have already become the hot tool this election year, with both campaigns, opinion sites, and pollsters releasing apps just to cover the campaign..

The Obama campaign released another last week and it’s raising eyebrows. The app will keep you up to date with the latest campaign news, but more importantly it is designed to get out the vote. You can use the app to find local polling info, including a map which will show you registered Democrats.

The app draws on publicly available info, so there’s no real privacy concern. But the app does still bother some users. “I do think it’s something useful for them, but it’s also creepy,” said Brooklyn resident Lori Carena when she was shown the app. “My neighbors across the street can know that I’m a Democrat. I’m not sure I like that.”

While this is public info, do we really want it to be handed out to just anyone? My concern is that it can be misused or become a source of conflict. Should the Obama campaign have released this app?
