That's practically the case at Newsweek today, which got a lot more than it bargained for when it offered 146 senior staffers generous buyouts (as much as two years' salary) and 111 of them accepted. Among the departures: critics David Gates, David Ansen, and Cathleen McGuigan; top tech writer Steven Levy (who's headed to Wired with a writing contract as bonus); Budget Travel chief Harold Shain; the top research staff, and senior editors Nancy Cooper, George Hackett, and Alexis Gelber, among many, many others.
