Background: Afar officially launched on August 18, 2009, aiming to fill a niche of experiential travel content. Seeking to find "connections between the traveler, a place, and its people," Afar magazine focuses both on international and domestic travel, delving deep into the culture of global destinations and illuminating authentic local culture.

Attracting readers with a desire to pursue luxurious travel experiences, Afar targets an affluent, sophisticated audience. Highly educated and engaged, Afar's target readers are open-minded and range between the ages of 35 and 55. Afar's mission is to "inspire and guide those who travel the world seeking to connect with its people, experience their cultures, and understand their perspectives," a mantra that permeates the magazine's content. Afar dedicates its pages to culture, passion, and voluntourism, framing each destination as a new place to discover, not just escape to. Taking the reader beyond the sightseeing and into the depths of a new location, Afar finds a distinctive way to capture travel.

The magazine has received plenty of accolades: Folio: named Afar one of the most notable launches of 2009; the Society of American Travel Writers gave it a Lowell Thomas Award for "Best Travel Magazine;" and the mag earned the first-ever four star review for a launch from the New York Post. Both Travel Weekly and the New York Times have covered the nascent pub's unique footing in the competitive travel category. Afar has refined its editorial structure a bit since the premiere issue, eliminating some departments to free up space in the feature well. Says executive editor Julia Cosgrove, "We've been finding that readers are really responsive to our feature stories, and we want to give them the length and visual treatment they deserve." Accompanied by "lots of wonderful, big pictures," the narratives can stretch to 4,000 words in length, which Cosgrove points out is rare in these times.
