Changes Unfurl at Time Inc.; Shakeup at CNN
November 6, 2009|
Is Oprah Winfrey ready to leave CBS? Nikki Finke hears the Queen of All Media will end her syndication deal with CBS Corp. and move her daytime talk show to the Oprah Winfrey Network as soon as mid-2011. Insiders at CBS say negotiations are ongoing and The New York Times finds sources who think Winfrey might stay on broadcast television for the massive audience but move to another syndicate...
Time Inc. plans to cut 280 jobs in New York. Up to a dozen buyout packages are available at Time, while People seeks eight volunteers. Essence cuts 18 staffers, including "the entire Web team." The Lifestyle Group also takes a hit, with "dozens" gone from the Birmingham offices of Southern Progress and three let go from Real Simple in New York. Although Time Inc. said that it would not shutter any publications as part of its restructuring, Fortune Small Business was closed, and 11 employees were shown the door... Ellen Pollock and John Byrne, executive editors at BusinessWeek, will stay on despite the magazine's sale to Bloomberg LP. Managing editor Ciro Scotti will also remain, although Roger Neal, senior vice president and general manager of BusinessWeek.com, walks away. Jessica Sibley is the new publisher... Susan Plagemann, publisher of Marie Claire since 2004, jumps to the same position at Vogue. She replaces Tom Florio, who will now oversee the fashion bible along with Teen Vogue, Bon Appétit, and Condé Nast Traveler... Purpose Driven Connection, the collaboration between pastor Rick Warren and Reader's Digest, goes online-only after just four issues... Hachette promotes Dillon McDonald to CEO of the automotive group... Kyle Pope will be the next editor to try to survive at the New York Observer. The former Condé Nast Portfolio No. 2 will replace Tom McGeveran when he departs at the end of the year... At Guardian News, cuts come to the D.C. office... In an effort to attract readers, the San Francisco Chronicle goes glossy (although less so than initially anticipated). Newspaper brass hope the new paper will draw advertisers, as well. The paper's third quarter circulation dropped 26 percent from a year ago... CNN makes big changes as Mark Nelson, head of CNN Productions, leaves. Scott Matthews, previously in charge of live programming, takes over for Nelson in addition to heading the Investigative unit. More than a dozen new positions will be created in Soledad O'Brien's expanded In America franchise... Tucker Carlson hires Moira Bagley as an editor at his conservative news site, The Daily Caller... Sheila McClear scores a book deal for her memoir about working as a peep show dancer in Times Square... Kiersten Hollars leaves her job as head of PR for Digg.com to join AOL under her old Yahoo boss, Brad Garlinghouse... And there are changes at St. Martin's Press, HUGE, Inc., and more...
