Fortune's Rik Kirkland: a managing editor who just didn't feel like managing anymore. Kirkland sent a memo around Monday announcing he would step down on April 1 in order to start writing again, rather than simply chair morning meetings and hobnob with advertisers. Was it really his own idea--one he's supposedly been formulating since Christmas--or was he nudged along? Very likely the former, as Kirkland was a loyal lieutenant of previous managing editor (and now editorial director and Time Inc. heir apparent) John Huey.
