How long have you been at Chronicle? Almost eight years.
How long have you been in publishing? Nine years—just before landing at Chronicle I interned for a year at a really wonderful little literary press here called Mercury House, as well as for a couple Chronicle Books authors. All [were] unpaid, so [I was] temping and living off the last vapors of student loans from grad school.

Mediabistro: Can you describe Chronicle's publishing mission?

Mockus: I'd wanted to work here for years, in part because I could tell a Chronicle book ...
